His first published work L'Usage du Monde, chronicling his travels in Turkey, Iran and Pakistan appeared in 1963, and was followed by Japon in 1967, Chronique Japonaise in 1975, Le Poisson-scorpion (his only novel) in 1982, and Journal d'Aran et d'Autres Lieux in 1990, and many other works of a far-ranging nature.
