QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

The phrase Guan Miao, 'To Perceive Mystery', is taken from the first chapter of Daodejing, 'The Way of the Dao' by Laozi:

Gu chang wuyu, yi guan qi miao, 'Therefore, always be without intent so that we can perceive its mystery.'

Compare a kesi hanging scroll in the National Palace Museum Collection which has very similar calligraphy by the Qianlong Emperor, and his seal, illustrated in Tapestry in the Collection of the National Palace Museum, Tokyo, 1970, no. 82.
