Scantily clad and resting upon an overturned amphora, her garlanded hair tied in a chignon, with gaze cast downwards, lifting her robes over her head with her left arm, the sculptor's name and the date incised to the back

Although the 1784 Descriptive Catalogue of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory lists, under Section I 'STATUES' No 18 'A Naiade, fitting, with an Urn for conveying Water, at a cost of £31.10.0, this is an unusually late dated piece of Coade stone. The firm closed in circa 1840 and the moulds were finally sold in 1843. It is possible that the mould for the present Naiad figure was bought by H.Bentley at this time.
