Oblong 2o (298 x 420 mm). Title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette. Additional engraved title-page from the French edition of 1764. Engraved portrait of Piazzetta in text, decorative head- and tail-pieces, engraved figural initials and 48 engraved plates of 24 subjects, comprising 24 by Franceso Bartolozzi in outline with cross-hatching and 24 by Marco Pitteri with roulette work. (Some occasional pale spotting.) Contemporary vellum-backed boards (a bit rubbed). Provenance: Louisa Prat (name in ink on front cover); acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, 1962.

FIRST EDITION of Piazzetta's famous drawing manual, and one of the most attractive works of the great period of Venetian illustrated books. The self-portrait, dated 1738, is the only surviving etching by Piazzetta himself. The preliminaries include a biography of the artist by his friend and admirer, the publisher Albrizzi. This edition was soon followed by the more common and inferior French edition of 1764. Cicognara 345.
