A CARNELIAN AGATE 'THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER' TREE TRUNK-FORM VASE
QIANLONG/JIAQING PERIOD, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
The vase is finely carved in the form of a tree trunk with the reddish area of the stone depicting a winding prunus branch. Pine and bamboo are carved to the reverse, with a further lingzhi spray sprouting aside a rocky bed. The side of the vase bears a six-character inscription, beside a four-character seal mark. There is a further four-character incised seal mark to the base.

The four-character seal mark reads liu feng cao tang, which may be translated as 'The Humble Hall of the Six Peaks'. The six-character inscription states that this piece was made in autumn during the cyclical year of bingchen, corresponding to 1796, made by an individual named Xiqiao.
