A VERY RARE LARGE ALOESWOOD AND HARDWOOD 'LANDSCAPE' VASE
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The vase is of rectangular section standing on a flat base rising to wide shoulders, before tapering towards its lipped mouth rim. It is exquisitely carved around the body on the front and back in high relief, each with a landscape scene portraying monumental mountain ranges dotted with trees and pavilions, while the sides are plain and made in a secondary soft wood. The neck is carved in shallow relief with pairs of kui dragons flanking a Shou medallion on the front and back, and further pairs at the sides.
