The present sitter was the daughter of Andrew Mahaffey, a superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Elizabeth McPherson. She married and had six children with Major General Albion Paris Howe, who served in the Civil War as well as the campaigns against the Seminole and Sioux tribes. After General Howe's retirement, the family settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
