The two paths

A painter of portraits and decorative figurative compositions, Hallé was a friend of Burne-Jones, Watts, Herkomer and Alma-Tadema as well as many other leading artists of the time. Despite his continental training, studying under Baron Marochetti and L. von Mottez, his paintings were mostly inspired by the aesthetic style of Burne-Jones. From 1877 he exhibited at the newly-founded Grosvenor Gallery, along with the leading Secessionist painters of the day, and after 1887 he was also involved with the New Gallery. He was a co-director of both galleries as well as a regular exhibitor.
