Off the coast of North Africa at Ténès, between Oran and Algiers

Founded in 875 A.D. by Spanish colonists, Ténès, was a small Mediterranean Sea port built on the site of the ancient Phoenician and Roman colonies of Catenna. Captured by the corsair Khayr al-Din (Barbarossa) in 1517, it was occupied by the French in 1843. The modern town of Ténès rests on a rocky plateau overlooking the Wadi Allalah estuary and a harbour sheltered on the east by Cape Ténès.
