The design for the mounts on the central door, depicting Erato, the Muse of Poetry, was exhibited by Christofle at the 1878 Exposition universelle in Paris, and is engraved in the Illustrated Catalogue Paris International Exhibition, p. 137. This design probably provided François Linke with a pattern he used to create the decoration to the present cabinet. A cabinet with similar mounts to the central panel sold Christie’s, New York, 24 April 2002, lot 145 ($19,120). Another apparently unsigned cabinet closely resembling the present lot sold Christie’s, London, 28 October 1993, (£10,350).
