After the grande sonnerie, the minute repeater is the most complex and sophisticated horological complication, demanding utmost virtuosity and skills, both technical and artistic, from the watchmakers in charge of assembling it. The conception of F.P. Journe's calibre 1408 minute repeating movement in 18K gold with a thickness of only 4 mm required an innovative and hitherto unknown construction - combined with the stainless steel case the watch astonishes with a lightness of only 69.6 grams, strap included, making the Répétition Souveraine one of the lightest complications in the world.
To ensure the best possible striking tone F.P. Journe has chosen stainless steel as opposed to the traditional gold or platinum cases, its crystaline structure rendering it optimal for the purpose. Two major technical developments assure the clear sound of the ultra-slim repeating movement: a flat gong which provides a louder and clearer sound than tradition gongs, and an innovative system of striking racks and strike selection mechanisms requiring muss less space than a conventional mechanism.
