Sickert probably visited Bath in 1916 and returned there in 1917 and 1918. He rented a house, The Lodge, Entry Hill, with his wife, on the far side of the River Avon. Pulteney Bridge was designed by Robert Adam, and was opened in 1771 to span the Avon. Sickert painted this subject on several occasions, and a larger, more panoramic version of it is in the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, Paul Mellon Collection.

We are very grateful to Dr Wendy Baron for her assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
