For a comparable composition of Bacchus and Ariadne by Rocca see G. Sestieri, Michele Rocca e la pittura rococò a Roma, Rome, 2004, cat. 13B, pl. XIII, and for Angelica and Medoro, see ibid., pp. 152-155. The latter subject is taken from books XVII and XIX of Orlando Furioso, the epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto, where Angelica falls in love with a Saracen knight, Medoro; the two elope, inscribing their names on trees and walls of caves, igniting the anger of Orlando.
