Beginning in the mid-1960s and through the early 1970s, Castle mastered his stack lamination technique of forming an overall mass of wood from which he could carve into sculptural forms. This mirror, of which he made few in variation, is a fine example of Castle's seminal work of this period, a time in which the designer began moving away from his stacked works and to develop more decorative motifs to communicate.
cf. J. Giovannini, D. Taragin and E. Cook, Jr., Furniture by Wendell Castle, New York, 1989, pp. 27-29, 32-47 for discussion and images of Castle's stack lamination works.
