Paul Fischer studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. His early works depicted city life and the intricate relationships between its inhabitants. As he became well travelled he would depict cities in Scandinavia, Italy and Germany, but it is his works of his hometown Copenhagen for which he is best known. The present lot, with a personal dedication from New Year's Eve in 1910, shows a small caricature of city life. Set under the stork fountain in Amagertorv square, an elegant family preoccupied with buying flowers and are watched over by a waiting pickpocket, whilst a nearby officer is himself distracted by the elegant lady.
The inscription on this work translates as 'Dear Buchner. Thanks for all the efforts this year. I wish you a happy 1911. Your devoted Paul Fischer'.
