This impressive pair of columns is signed by Paul Sédille, the famed Parisian architect whose passion for the classical orders and unique reinterpretation of the Renaissance style resulted in some of the most exceptional buildings of the Belle Epoque. Sédille completed numerous commissions in Paris including the famed Printemps department store with a façade that combined elements of classical architecture with brightly colored tiled panels. Sédille also worked with a number of artisans in the field of the decorative arts – including the ceramicist Jules-Paul Loebnitz – and the present columns could possibly have been the result of one such partnership. With their finely cast capitals and large scale, this lot is a fine manifestation of Sédille’s commitment to the antique architectural tradition.
