A sense of easy tranquillity pervades this characteristic work by Aert van der Neer. His employment of trees to frame one side of the picture and lone figures that meander along a winding path references Flemish landscape painters such as Gillis van Coninxloo, while his use of a high vantage point is more idiosyncratic.
