The recipient of this painting is Zhou Fohai (1897-1948). In his youth he studied in Japan and became acquainted with many influential figures. He was actively involved in the Chinese Communist Party, before becoming Chiang Kai-shek’s aide. During the war, he was also close to the politician, Wang Jingwei.
