The sitter was the third daughter of the 1st Baron Suffield and Mary, née Assheton. She married, in 1802, John Petre (formerly Varlo) and had a son, John Berney Petre (1806-1882). Downman painted other members of the family, including the sitter's father as well as her sister, Mary's father-in-law, Sir George Armitage in 1795. A slightly smaller version of the present miniature was sold Christie's, London, 3 March 1993, lot 38 (the sitter identified in a saleroom notice).
