Limited edition, number 128 of 120 copies on papier velin d'Arches from a total edition of 161. The harmony of text and illustration is enhanced by Marius Michel's binding which makes this a very desirable copy.

Color-printed pictorial title page, 4 color-printed section titles, each page with wood-engraved border, some with color printed head- or tailpieces, color-printed colophon all by Florian after Giraldon, 4 color-printed etched plates 4 color-printed headpieces by Chessa after Merson. Contemporary dark blue morocco binding by Marius Michel, covers elaborately decorated with a stylized Grolieresque pattern with scrolled floral and foliate designs of gray, pink and green morocco onlays, spine in five compartments, two blind-lettered, central compartment with floral design in three colors, edges gilt; light brown morocco doublures stamp-signed "Marius Michel," single gilt fillet surrounding a border of 32 pansies of purple, violet, maroon, lavender and green morocco onlays, blind-ruled stems, dark blue silk linings, original wrappers bound in; original morocco-backed chemise and slipcase. "This book offers a dazzling display of colored adornment in which Merson's etchings predominate over Giraldon's wood-engraved borders and decorations. In his four plates and four headpieces he interprets Musset's poems as if they were classical eclogues, achieving a suave harmony" (Ray). It is a fine example of the final development of Michel's "flore ornementale" design in which gilt fillets of earlier bindings are replaced by simple outlines in blind.
