According to tradition, this chair descended in the Lindley family of Ten Mile Creek, Pennsylvania and was taken to South Africa by Daniel Lindley (1801-1880) in 1834. Lindley was an important American missionary who was responsible for founding the Inanda Seminary School in 1869 and was pastor to the first Dutch Reformed Church in the Orange Free State. The chair remained in South Africa until recently, when it was discovered on the family farm belonging to Daniel's grand-daughter, Marjorie Lindley.
