The decoration of opalescent enamel was most desirable in the early years of the 20th century, the so-called “belle Epoque” period. The technique was perfected by Fabergé in the late 19th century, giving a rich yet subtle lustrous effect. This new fashion was taken up by Cartier, one of Fabergé’s main competitors in the opening years of the 20th century for the decoration of the watches and objet de luxe for which the company became so renowned.

A watch with similar decoration is illustrated in: Le Temps de Cartier, Barracca, Negretti & Nencini, 1989, p. 22
