Building on his father's reputation, Giacomo Guardi specialized in views of his native Venice which were popular with European Grand Tourists. To meet the great demand Giacomo often repeated compositions as is the case with the present two views; another gouache showing the Dogana and the Salute was sold at Christie's, London, 5 July 2005, lot 105 and a drawing in pen and wash of the San Giorgio Maggiore is in the Museo Correr, Venice (A. Morassi, Guardi. I disegni, Venice, 1973, fig. 632).
