ATTRIBUTED TO THE RYCROFT PAINTER, CIRCA 510 B.C.

The Rycroft Painter takes his name from an amphora previously in the Rycroft collection, later in the Spencer-Churchill collection (p. 335, no. 1 in J.D. Beazley, Attic Black-figure Vase-painters). The struggle between Apollo and Herakles over the Delphic tripod, as seen on the kalpis presented here, was a subject treated numerous times by the Rycroft Painter, sometimes in the presence of a deer, as here.
