The stone used to create the current bottle is notable for its gem-like quality. The glass-like appearance of the outer layer of stone mimics the materials used in carved overlay glass bottles of the same period, but in a much harder and naturally-occurring material.
Robert Kleiner, in his entry for this bottle in Chinese Snuff Bottles: The White Wings Collection, Hong Kong, 1997, p. 177, no. 120, notes that only one other bottle with a similar framing device is recorded and was from the Dwyer Collection, sold at Christie's London, 12 October 1987, lot 213.
