The present illustrations of the Ramayana, the epic of the hero Rama’s journey and an important devotional text, depict many events in miniature form, painted with the most fastidious attention to detail. The tradition of Jaipur in which the artist executed these paintings is particularly evident in the facial features and the ‘flat’ style derived from the well-known master Sahib Ram (active during the reign of Sawai Pratap Singh, 1778-1803).
In the present work Rama attacks the palace of Ravana in retaliation for the demon kidnapping his wife, Sita, and imprisoning her in his kingdom in Lanka. Hanuman’s army assists him in his attack.
