Il est représenté debout en pratyalidhasana piétinant deux groupes de divinités et d'animaux sur une base lotiforme. Ses mains principales enlacent sa parèdre et tiennent le karttrika et le kapala. Les autres mains rayonnent autour de lui tenant des attributs divers. Il est surmonté par Tsongkhapa et Milasrepa. Le registre inférieur est orné d'un donateur et de divinités protectrices.

A FRAMED THANGKA DEPICTING YAMANTAKA
TIBET, LATE 15TH CENTURY

This small thangka portrays Vajrabhairava in sexual union with his consort Vajravetala. The buffalo-headed deity is a wrathful manifestation of Manjushri, the god of wisdom. The latter’s head is topping the other eight faces. The upper corners show Tsongkhapa flanked by his disciples and Milarepa holding his hand against his ear. The lower register sees a monk facing a couple, Sadbhujamahakala, Jambhala and Yama. The colour combination of primarily blue and red gives the painting a special effect, with its details finely executed.
