Selon James Byam Shaw, l’inspiration de Domenico pour ses nombreux dessins représentant le baptême du Christ serait une peinture perdue de Giovanni Battista, aujourd’hui uniquement connue grâce à une gravure de Domenico (J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, Londres, 1962, p. 33). Domenico à lui-même traité le sujet dans une peinture à l'huile, qui se trouve maintenant au Musée Stibbert de Florence (A. Mariuz, Giandomenico Tiepolo, Venise, 1971, p. 119, pl. 305). La présente feuille fait partie d’un ensemble de treize dessins proposés lors de la vente Beauchamp à Christie’s, Londres, 15 juin 1965, lots 6 à 18 et aujourd'hui conservé à la Staatsgalerie de Stuttgart (voir G. Knox and C. Thiem, Tiepolo. Zeichnungen von Giambattista, Domenico und Lorenzo Tiepolo aus der Graphischen Sammlung der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, aus Württembergischem Privatbesitz und dem Martin von Wagner Museum der Universität Würzburg, cat. exp., Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, 1970, nos 44-56).
According to James Byam Shaw, the inspiration for Domenico’s very many drawings of this subject was likely a lost painting by Giovanni Battista, now only known through an etching by Domenico (J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London, 1962, p. 33). Domenico himself also treated the subject in an oil painting, now in the Museo Stibbert, Florence (A. Mariuz, Giandomenico Tiepolo, Venice, 1971, p. 119, pl. 305). In addition to the present sheet, there a further thirteen drawings of the subject, offered in the Beauchamp sale (Christie’s, London, 15 June 1965, lots 6-18), now in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (see G. Knox and C. Thiem, Drawings by Gianbattista, Domenico and Lorenzo Tiepolo from the Graphische Sammlung, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, from Private Collections in Württemberg and from the Martin von Wagner Museum of the University of Wuerzburg, exhib. cat., Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, 1970, nos. 44-56).
