Die wichtigsten Frauenfiguren in Alberto Giacomettis Leben waren seine Frau Annette, die er in Genf kennen lernte und 1949 heiratete und seine Mutter Annetta, zu der er eine starke Verbindung bis zu ihrem Tode 1964 hatte. Der prägenden Einfluss und Anteil der beiden Frauen an Giacomettis Werdegang drückte sich besonders in der künstlerischen Umsetzung aus, Annette posierte ihm viele Male und wurde Sujet in einer Vielzahl von Gemälden, Zeichnungen und Skulpturen. In der Bleistiftzeichnung von 1957 Annette et la mère sous la suspension à Stampa sind die beiden starken Persönlichkeiten, Frau und Mutter, zusammen abgebildet in der Wohnung in Stampa, wo der Künstler aufwuchs. Sie sassen am Tisch unter der Lampe, eine Szenerie, die in den Werken der Künstlerfamilie immer wieder aufgegriffen wurde und ein Ort der familiären Zusammenkunft war. Die komplexe Komposition der Lampe nimmt im raumdurchdringenden Liniennetz der Zeichnung einen prominenten Platz ein und dieses Motiv war bereits beim Vater des Künstlers in einer Reihe von Gemälden von grossem Interesse, sowie beim Gemälde Giovanni Giacomettis; Die Lampe von 1912.
The most important female figures in Alberto Giacometti's life were his wife Annette, whom he met in Geneva and married in 1949, and his mother Annetta, to whom he had a deep connection until her death in 1964. The formative influence and the role these two women had in Giacometti’s career and life found particular expression in his artistic realization of them: Annette often posed for him and she was the subject of a great number of paintings, drawings and sculptures. In this pencil drawing of 1957 Annette et la mère sous la suspension à Stampa, these two strong personalities – wife and mother – are seen in the apartment in Stampa where the artist grew up. The drawing shows them seated at a table under the shade of a lamp, a place where the family liked to gather, and this scene was one that was used again and again in the works of this artist family. The complex composition with the lamp occupies a prominent place in this drawing with the web of lines filling the room; and, as a series of paintings demonstrates – particularly Giovanni Giacometti’s painting with the title The Lamp, 1912 – this motif was already of great interest to the artist’s father.
