Thelma Cazalet-Keir (1899-1989) is best known as one of Britain’s first female Members of Parliament: she entered local politics in 1924 and was the M.P. for Islington East from October 1931 to July 1945. She was the second female M.P. to achieve the position of a Cabinet Minister during this period. As with two other early female M.P.s, Nancy Astor and Margaret Whittingham, Thelma Cazalet-Keir remained a Christian Scientist throughout her life. She was a member of the Arts Council as well as a Governor of the BBC for five years. As a champion of women’s rights, she was a keen supporter of the Fawcett Society, becoming President in 1964.

The present work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on David Jagger, prepared by Timothy Dickson.
