Officially published by Grabhorn Press of San Francisco under the patronage of Albert Bender, ‘Parmelian Prints of the High Sierras’ is the first portfolio by Ansel Adams, and contains a total of 18 prints.

When the portfolio was published it included the statement ‘One Hundred and Fifty Copies Printed by the Grabhorn Press, San Francisco, August MCMXXVII’. Adams himself printed all of the works for the portfolios, though he estimated that ultimately roughly 75 copies were completed, not 150. The paper, a very thin and cream-colored gelatin silver paper manufactured by Kodak, was marketed as Vitava Athena Grade T. Parchment Paper and stands out as a hallmark of this era of Adams’ work, with a nod to the prevalent Pictorialism of the day.

The prints are as follows:

The Abode of Snow, c. 1923
From Glacier Point, c. 1923
Mount Clarence King, 1924
Marion Lake, c. 1925
Kearsarge Pinnacles, c. 1925
Lower Paradise Valley, c. 1925
East Vidette, c. 1925
