Radically different from any of the firm's previous models it was designed by the celebrated Gérald Genta, the shape inspired by a diver's brass helmet, requesting a nautical-related name. Audemars Piguet chose Royal Oak, based on the name of a series of eight vessels King Charles II of England hid to escape the Roundheads - the supporters of the Parliament during the English Civil War - following the Battle of Worcester in 1651. Allying dominant designs and groundbreaking materials, timepieces of the Royal Oak collection are amongst the most coveted timepieces ever, enjoying a continously expanding popularity.

According to the Archives of Audemars Piguet, the present watch was sold in 1978 to France.

It is in very well-preserved original overall condition, featuring the “petite tapisserie” dial with the applied logo and white gold numbers, the case back is numbered 940, meaning it was the 940th example of ref. 4100ST to be produced. The watch furthermore still has the original, hexagonal non-marked winding crown.

Reference 4100 was introduced in 1972 alongside the celebrated ref. 5402, with the same bold yet elegant design but in a smaller case.
