The sitter was the son of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond and Sarah, née Cadogan. He was a British Army officer and politician. He was known for his support for the colonists during the American Revolutionary War and served in the ministries of Rockingham and Pitt. He was also a passionate patron of the arts and a member of the Society of Arts.
The original large-scale portrait by Romney is in the National Portrait Gallery, London, inv. no. NPG 4877.
