A group of porcelains with a comparable decoration in the well – Magu and a child near a deer and a rock with prunus branches – belonged to Augustus the Strong and was sent to the then unfinished ‘Japanische Palace’ after his death in 1733. These pieces bear an inventory number from the Japanese Palace in Dresden. A circular dish with a Japanese Palace inventory number was sold at Sotheby’s New York, 17 May 2021, lot 282. Another dish with the same Japanese Palace inventory number was sold at Lyon & Turnbull, London, 5 November 2021, lot 229. However, these pieces differ from our dish as they do not have a geometrical-patterned band between the well and the rim, and as the flower sprays on the rim are smaller. See a similar dish, with a geometrical band and larger peony sprays, sold at Christie’s London, South Kensington, 9 November 2016, lot 344.
