AMARO DO VALE, LAMENTATION OF CHRIST (RECTO) AND NOLI ME TANGERE (VERSO), BLACK CHALK, PEN, BROWN INK

Amaro do Valle worked at the Monastery of El Escorial with both Federico Zuccari and Pellegrino Tibaldi around 1590, and became painter at the court of Philip III, King of Spain and Portugal, in 1612. Most of his work has disappeared over the years, despite a substantial production of paintings for the churches of Lisbon. The present drawing may be a preparation for a lost altarpiece. Of the few surviving drawings by the artist, three are in the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon (see Drawings. The MNAA Collection, exhib. cat., Lisbon, Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, 1994, nos. 13-15, ill.).

À la fin du XVI^e et au début du XVII^e siècles, Amaro do Valle est un peintre actif au Portugal et en Espagne. Il travaille au Monastère de l’Escurial aux côtés de Federico Zuccaro et Pellegrino Tibaldi vers 1590, et devient peintre à la cour de Philippe III, roi d’Espagne et du Portugal, à partir de 1612. La majeure partie de son œuvre a disparu, malgré une conséquente production de peintures pour les églises de Lisbonne. Le présent dessin pourrait être préparatoire à un retable perdu. Parmi les rares dessins conservés, trois se trouvent au Musée d’Art Ancien de Lisbonne (Dessins : La collection du MNAA, cat. exp., Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbonne, 1994, nos 13-15).
