A student of the Carracci in Bologna, Brizio developed a distinctive drawing style. The present sheet can be compared with other works by the artist, similar in style, size and technique, such as the composition of Saint Benedict in ecstasy in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (inv. NMH 1275/1863; see P. Bjurström, Italian Drawings, IV, Florence, Siena, Modena, Bologna, Stockholm, 2002, no. 1305, ill.), connected with a painting in Bologna.
