George Coppell (1837-1901) became a senior member of the banking firm Maitland, Phelps & Co. in 1886. Founded in 1796 by Robert Lenox (1759-1839), James Lenox (1772-1839), and William Maitland, the firm was at the time one of the oldest on Wall Street. By 1896, the firm's name was changed to Maitland, Coppell & Co., recognizing the importance of Coppell as the firm worked on the management and reorganization of a number of important railroads. As the present lot was given to Coppell within a few years of this re-naming by two other senior members, Gerald L. Hoyt (1851-1926) and Dallas B. Pratt (1849-1929), it is likely that this cup is in celebration of Coppell's achievements and contributions.
