Malcolm Warner has dated this double-sided sheet to around 1843. Although it has not been possible to identify the subjects, the compositions recall the episodes from Anglo-Saxon history which Millais drew for a competition run by the Art-Union of London in that year, and seem to relate to the many cartoons by other artists exhibited at Westminster Hall in 1843 as part of the competition to paint murals in the New Palace of Westminster.
