ITALIAN SCHOOL, 16TH CENTURY, THE RECLINING CHRIST CHILD, RAISING HIS ARM, AFTER RAPHAEL, BLACK CHALK, STUMPING, ON GREY (FORMERLY BLUE) PAPER
This large drawing is based on a lost painting by Raphael, of which a copy exists in the Musée du Louvre (inv. 644). The Christ Child can also be compared to that of Raphaël’s Madonna di Loreto in the Musée de Condé, Chantilly (inv. 68; see J. Meyer zur Capellen, Raphaël. A critical Catalogue of His Paintings, II, The Roman Religious Paintings, ca. 1508-1520, Leinen, 2000, no. 51, ill.).
