« Par la sélection des objets qui l’entourent, l’artiste développe un vocabulaire iconographique qu’il conserve toute son existence et qu’il scénarise dans ses tableaux. Les bibelots, les ustensiles sont ses sujets, tout autant que les modèles vivants ou les animaux. Foujita porte une attention particulière à ces objets de peu ; pipe, assiette, clé ou montre. L’artiste n’impose entre eux aucune hiérarchie. Une verrerie dénichée dans une brocante, un textile, un chat, un caillou ramassé à l’occasion d’un voyage en Italie ou une œuvre d’art ont une égale importance. Tous racontent, chacun à leur façon, un pan des admirations de l’artiste, son amour pour les matériaux, sa fascination pour l’art populaire. »

Trinkets and utensils are his subjects, just as much as live models or animals. Foujita paid particular attention to these objects of little importance, pipe, plate, key or watch. The artist did not impose any hierarchy between them. Glassware found at a flea market, a textile, a cat, a pebble picked up on a trip to Italy or a work of art are all equally important. All of them tell, each in their own way, a part of the artist’s admirations, his love for materials, his fascination for popular art."
