In 1937, American socialite Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward of Great Britain said ‘I Do’ in a small ceremony in France, after the former King of England decided to abdicate the throne for the woman he loved. Photographs capturing the day show Wallis wearing a simple and elegant fitted dress custom made by American couturier Mainbocher, her hand showcasing the emerald engagement ring given to her by the Duke along with her infamous Cartier bracelet suspending various gem set cross charms.

Known for their impeccable eye for the finest, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor only worked with the best designers and houses in every capacity. They cultivated strong relationships with iconic jewelry maisons such as Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels, with the Duke in particular working very closely with top designers and craftsman to create spectacular pieces for his Duchess.

No detail was ever left unturned. Every home, surface, outfit and accessory were selected with the thoughtful and unique eye of collectors who loved and appreciated beautiful objects. The present handbag by Van Cleef & Arpels (Lot 132) is a wonderful example from their famed collection representing the best in both jewelry and high fashion.
