This extremely attractive centre seconds watch is significant as the only publicly known example of a reference 585.

The two accompanying Patek Philippe Extracts from the Archives confirm that this wristwatch was especially made in Patek Philippe’s workshops from an existing pocket watch, probably for the original owner.

It is recorded in Patek Philippe’s archives that the movement was manufactured in 1913. It was then sold as a pocket watch in 1929. Ten years later, in 1939, the pocket watch case was replaced by the present reference 585 wristwatch case. The striking silvered dial featuring the long signature ‘Patek Philippe & Co. Genève’ and applied yellow gold pyramidal hour indexes and Arabic quarter hour numerals would have been probably supplied by Stern Frères and fitted at the same time in order to create an entirely new and almost certainly unique wristwatch.

Special request watches such as this clearly demonstrate that the owners of Patek Philippe watches held them in such high regard that they preferred to have their original watches remade in the company’s workshops as fashions and styles changed rather than buy again new. Naturally, such transformations would have been extremely expensive to carry out and were, as with the present watch, meticulously recorded in Patek Philippe’s archives. The vision of those devoted customers in having their prized watches re-styled has resulted in some of the most attractive and appealing creations of the company’s 20th century production. The present watch was given the probably unique reference number ‘585’ and as such offers collectors the opportunity to obtain an exclusive and fully documented wristwatch with fascinating history.
