Albert Bierstadt and his wife Rosalie married in 1866 and embarked upon a European journey together in 1867, visiting France, Germany and Italy, including Lake Como. The present painting was part of a group of ten works that Bierstadt gifted to his wife, perhaps recalling the couple's fondness for the locale and commemorating their travels.
