When Roger Rearick published the drawing for the first time (Rearick, op. cit., p. 52), he connected the energetic and rapid execution of the sheet with that of other studies made when, around 1534, Paris Bordone was working on his masterpiece the Presentation of the ring to the Doge for the Scuola Grande di San Marco (now in the Gallerie dell’Accademia, Venice; see Donati, op. cit., no. 80, ill.).

For his studies Bordone often employed a broad technique, delineating the figures with rapid and expressive strokes of black and white chalk.
