ATTRIBUTED TO FRANCESCO ALBANI, CIRCE AND ULYSSES, BLACK CHALK, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH, HEIGHTENED WITH WHITE, LOWER RIGHT CORNER MADE UP

The present drawing, previously exhibited as by Annibale Carracci (c. 1560-1609), has since been convincingly attributed to Francesco Albani (A. Weston-Lewis, op.cit.). The drawing joins a relatively constricted corpus of drawings by the Bolognese Master, who trained under the Carracci Academy.
The subject of Circe and Ulysses is portrayed in another of Albani’s drawings, in the Royal Collection, Windsor (inv. 902122, fig. 1). Like the present drawing, the Windsor sheet has also previously been attributed to members of the Carracci Family. The Windsor Sheet could be a preparatory drawing for a painting, previously recorded in four seventeenth century inventories (1623, 1633, 1662, and 1665) of the Ludovisi collection, Rome, now lost. Although Weston-Lewis notes that if there is indeed a link between the lost painting and Albani, then it would most likely be between the present sheet, as one of the more complete inventory descriptions (1623) describes the present drawing more closely: ‘A female giving drink to mars [sic], and Mercury putting grass into his wine, with a wild man sitting next to him, with a cornice painted in the guise of marble profiled with gold’.

Le présent dessin, précédemment donné à Annibale Carracci (c. 1560-1609), a depuis été attribué à Francesco Albani (A. Weston-Lewis, op.cit.). Il rejoint un corpus relativement restreint de dessins du maître bolonais, formé à l'Académie des Carracci.
Le sujet de Circé et Ulysse est représenté dans un autre dessin d'Albani, conservé à la Royal Collection, Windsor (inv. 902122, fig. 1). Comme le présent dessin, la feuille de Windsor a également été précedemment attribuée à des membres de la famille Carracci. La feuille de Windsor pourrait être un dessin préparatoire pour une peinture, précédemment enregistrée dans quatre inventaires du XVII^e siècle (1623, 1633, 1662 et 1665) de la collection Ludovisi, à Rome, aujourd'hui perdue. Bien que Weston-Lewis précise qu'il existe un lien entre la peinture perdue et Albani, il s'agirait plus probablement du présent dessin, car l'une des descriptions d'inventaire la plus complète (1623) le décrit plus précisement : ‘Une femme donnant à boire au mars [sic], et Mercure mettant de l'herbe dans le vin, avec un homme sauvage assis à côté d'eux, une corniche peinte en guise de marbre profilé d'or’.
