LOEDEWIJK TOEPUT, CALLED IL POZZOSERRATO, LANDSCAPE, GRAPHITE, PEN AND BROWN INK, BROWN WASH

Toeput was a painter, engraver and poet of Flemish origin. He trained in Venice, where he studied the works of Veronese (1528-1588) and Tintoretto (1518-1594). He later moved to Treviso and became one of the leading Nordic landscape artists working in the Venice area, producing magnificent landscapes in his studio, all based on studies from nature. As in the present drawing, Toeput often depicted a tree in silhouette in the foreground, beyond which a wide, sun filled landscape can be seen. Toeput est un peintre, graveur et poète d'origine flamande. Il se forme à Venise et y étudie les œuvres de Véronèse (1528-1588) et Tintoret (1518-1594). Plus tard, il s'installa à Trévise et devient l’un des meilleurs artistes nordiques de paysage actifs dans la région de Venise, réalisant de magnifiques paysages dans son atelier, tous basés sur des dessins d'après nature.
A l’image du présent dessin, Toeput représente souvent un arbre en contre-jour au premier plan qui ouvre la composition sur des lointains en pleine lumière. Pour un autre exemple, voir un Paysage vendu chez Christie's à Londres, le 4 juillet 1995, lot 248.
