The first Patek Philippe skeletonized watches were born in the 1860’s. In 1978, the firm would introduce their first regular production of skeletonized timepieces.
Released in 1985, the Ref. 918 uses a special caliber 17-170 to power the timepiece. The caliber is constructed in 14k yellow gold in order to handle the engraving process done to the movement. The Ref. 918 was released in 5 different examples with varying layouts of gem set diamond cases, or hand engravings. The engravings were completed by Christian Thibert, one of the world’s most renown engravers who started the Metiers d’art project at Patek Philippe. Mr. Thibert is known for his consistent preservation of the old decorative techniques of the past, such as enameling, engraving, and finishing. Such as the masterful engravings inscribed on the present watch.
