In 1949, the French architect Henri Chomette conceived of the building plans for the Société Générale Douala in Brazzaville. The style was distinctively modern with Jean Prouvé's workshops to supply ventilators, doors, brise-soleil, counters, tills and a handful of 'standard' sideboards including the present lot. It is a rare variation of Prouvé's iconic sideboard, model no. 150, with steel feet and aluminum sides painted in their original vert tilleul color, original aluminum doors, with an oak top, bottom and handles. The bottom oak plank also features four holes on the inside to guarantee ventilation while placed in the warm Brazzaville climate, which exemplifies Prouvé’s deep commitment to environmental functionality, material innovation, and industrial production methods.
