This picture is indistinctly dated. Previously, the picture has been identified as both `A View on the Teign with Haytor Rocks’, and `A view on the Exe near Lymstone’. Danby moved to Exmouth in 1846, but could have painted this view before o, stayr after this move. Technically, it bears similarity to `Figures fording the River Dart’ (see exh. cat. `Francis Danby, Bristol, Museum and Art Gallery, and London, Tate Gallery, 1988-9, no. 46’. The identity of Edward Hare is unknown. He does not seem to be related to the family of floor cloth manufacturers, one of whom was a major patron of the arts in Bristol.
