Of imposing size and finely carved in mirror image with antiques on the doors, the present pair would have been important furnishings in creating an imposing and majestic interior space. The present pair is related to a pair of compound cabinets and hatchests inset with various antiques in cloisonne enamel, porcelain and hardstones illustrated by Wan Yi, Wang Shuqing and Lu Yanzhen (compilers), translated by R. Scott and E. Shipley, Daily Life in the Forbidden City - The Qing Dynasty 1644-1912, Harmondsworth, 1988, pl. 202. A pair of hardwood compound cabinets and hatchests carved allover with antiques was sold at Christie’s New York, 14 September 2018, lot 1257.
